Our beaches are always changing due to natural coastal processes and weather patterns. Erosion can impact our beachfront, and where relocation of infrastructure is not possible, engineered seawalls are used.
Our seawalls are made of large boulders buried under the sand are used to protect properties and infrastructure. Seawalls are located along an invisible line along our coast known as the A-Line which was established by the Queensland Government in the 1960s and 1970s.
The construction of seawalls forms part of our City’s integrated coastal management program that helps protect our coastline from storm damage and erosion.
We are boosting our sea defences by delivering an extensive public seawall upgrades program as part of the Ocean Beaches Strategy 2013-2023.
