The Gold Coast is well known for its picture perfect beaches. They are one of the main reasons why people enjoy living in or visiting our city.
Recently a major project was undertaken which increased the volume of sand along sections of our beautiful coastline.
From June to October 2017, the Gold Coast was treated to an “Instagram worthy” sight of a large dredge, depositing over 3 million cubic metres of sand, at specified locations along our shores.
The additional sand was placed in the surf zone and will move with the coast’s natural processes, adding extra sand to our beaches. This will not only help protect one of our biggest assets from the threat of coastal erosion, it will ensure everyone can enjoy a beach experience now and for many years to come.
While the project’s primary focus was coastal protection, the placement of sand followed a ‘design with nature’ approach which resulted in the local surfing community enjoying some fun, new surf banks along parts of the coast.
The movement of sand along our coastline will continue to be monitored to ensure our beaches are clean, healthy, safe and accessible now and into the future.
