Groynes are structures which extend seaward from the shoreline. Groynes can assist with beach stabilisation as they can intercept sand moving along the coast to build up the beach.

On the Gold Coast, sand moves along the coast in a northerly direction due to longshore drift, this means that groynes on the Gold Coast assist with stabilising the beach on the southern side of the structure.
